Shaye Leidenius Honoured as 2017-18 ACAC Women's Golfer of the Year

Red Deer, October 5, 2017 – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Shaye Leidenius of the Red Deer College Queens has been selected as the 2017-18 ACAC Women's Golf Player of the Year.

Leidenius had an incredible season for RDC. At the ACAC Golf Championships, the Ponoka golfer earned individual gold and helped lead the Red Deer College Queens to a bronze medal. Leidenius shot an opening round of 84, and as the weather conditions became more challenging, she elevated her game and completed the final day of competition with an impressive 82 at the RedTail Landing Golf Club. Her two-day total of 166 strokes was 9 shots better than second place.

"Shaye's strong play and presence have been extremely impactful on our team this season. She has raised the bar for Red Deer College golfers," said head coach Scott Bergdahl. "She set the standard for RDC female golf this season and for the golfers who follow her."

"Shaye is a very driven and passionate player, and had a great performance at the ACAC Golf Championships. When a student-athlete is recognized at the ACAC level it is a positive reflection of our program at RDC and of our commitment to support the student-athletes who want to pursue their passion in academics and athletics," said Diane St-Denis, RDC Athletic Director.

Leidenius, a Kinesiology & Sport Studies student, was consistent all season. At the ACAC Women's North Regional in Camrose, she finished in top spot with 164 strokes. The second-year student-athlete finished in second place with a total of 159 strokes at the ACAC Women's South Regional at the Desert Blume Golf Club.
