Created and implemented in 2015 by the SAIT Trojans Outreach Program, Make Some Noise for Mental Health has grown into an ACAC conference-wide awareness campaign to break stigmas around mental health. By involving student-athletes, Make Some Noise for Mental Health is intended to encourage empathy, understanding and open mindedness while promoting resources and support available on campuses and in their communities.
The award-winning campaign expanded to the 17 ACAC member institutions and 11 communities in 2016 with the help of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Alberta Division to connect those experiencing mental illness and those who are impacted by mental illness with the support they need.
"The involvement of RBC as the presenting partner, and continued support of CMHA Alberta and the CMHA Alberta Regional Offices, has been absolutely pivotal in expanding the profile and scope of this important ACAC initiative. We simply can't thank both organizations enough for lending their influential voices to the ACAC's efforts to make more noise about mental health." - Mark Kosak, ACAC Chief Executive Officer.
We are excited to welcome the return of Honorary Chair, Sheldon Kennedy who won a Memorial Cup, World Junior Gold Medal and skated for three teams in his eight-year NHL career. He is best known for his courageous decision to charge his Major Junior Hockey league coach with sexual assault for the abuse he suffered over a five-year period while a teenager under his care. Sheldon has become a major influencer on changes in Canadian law related to child abuse. He also provides empowering online abuse, bullying and harassment prevention education to sport organizations, schools and the workplace through his company Respect Group Inc.
The 17 ACAC members will collaborate with CMHA and RBC through student-led, on-campus activities, and appearances from NHL Alumni Sheldon Kennedy from Jan 15 – Feb 11, 2018. We were honoured to include the participation of RBC Olympians Anastasia Bucsis, Jessica Campbell, and Marc Kennedy at regular season home games last year. This year's campaign is being supported by RBC Olympians Breanne Jenner (Women's Hockey) and Brady Leman to whom we extend wish them the very best as they represent Canada in PyeongChang at the February 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
