Desmond Wang Honoured as 2018-19 ACAC Male Badminton Player of the Year

EDMONTON, AB (February 18, 2019) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Desmond Wang of Concordia University of Edmonton has been selected as the 2018-19 ACAC male badminton Player of the Year.

The Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder badminton team finished the 2018-19 ACAC regular season in second place with 428 points after three tournaments. Desmond had an outstanding season for the Thunder, the 2nd year bachelor of science major managed to go a perfect 9-0 in the men's doubles division with partner Nicolas Pittman and a perfect 8-0 in the mixed doubles division with his sister Takeisha Wang.

Last season Desmond made quite the impact on the ACAC as a rookie claiming the men's singles ACAC gold and CCAA gold along with being named an ACAC All-Conference athlete. As a top contender once again, Desmond is hopeful to find the podium at conference championships to earn a ticket to national championships for a second straight year.

Director of Athletics, Joel Mrak, is proud of Desmond's accomplishments and is looking forward to his continued success in years to come, "Desmond turned a few heads last year en route to his first national title in his first national championship appearance as a freshman, and has picked up right where he left off with another dominant year in the ACAC. He just works hard and has improved his consistency over last season, so I believe that we have yet to see his full potential. He also understands the academic importance of his time here, managing an honours average to match his athletics success."

This prestigious award was presented to Desmond Wang at the 2018-2019 ACAC Badminton Championship held on February 16, 2019 at Highlands Golf Club in Edmonton, AB.
