ACAC Curling Winter Regional Bonspiel Kicks Off in Edmonton

Edmonton, AB – The second half of the ACAC curling season kicked off in Edmonton on Friday with the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder playing host to the Winter Regional at the Avonair Curling Club. The top men's, women's, and mixed curling teams from eight ACAC institutions are participating in the three-day event, with a qualification spot at the ACAC Conference Championships on the line.

Men's Division – Day 1

Concordia, Augustana, and NAIT all cruised through the first two draws on Day 1 to sit at 1-0 for the event. The Concordia Thunder opened draw #1 against the Lakeland Rustlers as the only men's teams playing early, ending with a 6-3 decision for the Thunder. NAIT and Augustana followed suit in draw #2 with wins over the Olds Broncos and Red Deer Kings respectively. All six men's teams will be in action in draw #3 on Saturday morning.

  • Augustana Vikings defeat the Olds Broncos 5-2
  • NAIT Ooks defeat the Red Deer Kings 5-3

Women's Division – Day 1

The first day of the women's event saw some very exciting competition, with the Augustana Vikings squeaking out a 7-6 win over the Olds Broncos that went down to the final stone in draw #1. Draw #2 featured the marquee matchup between Edmonton rivals Concordia and NAIT, with the Ooks pulling off the 4-2 upset over the Thunder. The NAIT Ooks and the Red Deer Queens remain as the only two undefeated teams after day 1 on the women's side.

  • Augustana Vikings defeat the Olds Broncos 7-6
  • Concordia Thunder defeat the MacEwan Griffins 5-4

  • MacEwan Griffins defeat the Augustana Vikings 6-4
  • Red Deer Queens defeat the Olds Broncos 7-2
  • NAIT Ooks defeat the Concordia Thunder 4-2

Mixed Division – Day 1

In draw #1 on the mixed side, it was the Portage Voyageurs picking up where they left off at the Fall Regional with a dominant 9-2 win over the Olds Broncos. The Voyageurs were not a fortunate in draw #2 as the Lakeland Rustlers pulled the 8-4 upset and handed Portage their first loss of the year. The NAIT Ooks and MacEwan Griffins looked strong through both of their first two match each to sit 2-0 on the day.

  • NAIT Ooks defeat the Lakeland Rustlers 7-2
  • MacEwan Griffins defeat Red Deer College 8-2
  • Portage Voyageurs defeat the Olds Broncos 9-2

Results – Draw #2:

  • MacEwan Griffins defeat the Olds Broncos 5-3
  • Lakeland Rustlers defeat the Portage Voyageurs 8-4
  • NAIT Ooks defeat Red Deer College 8-5

The top four teams in each division will move on to the ACAC Curling Championships taking place in Camrose, AB on February 16-18, 2018 and hosted by the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. The best men's and women's curling teams will continue on to CCAA Curling National Championships Leduc, AB from March 24-28, 2018.
