Winter Regional Wraps Up As ACAC Curling Championship Qualifiers Decided

Edmonton, AB – The ACAC Curling Winter Regional bonspiel hosted by the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder wrapped up on Sunday at the Avonair Curling Club in Edmonton. The top four teams in the men's, women's, and mixed divisions will move on to compete at the 2017-18 ACAC Curling Championships in Camrose, AB on February 16-18, 2018, hosted by the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. For the men and women's qualifiers, conference championship medalists will extend their season and continue on to CCAA Curling National Championships Leduc, AB from March 24-28, 2018.

Men's Division – Day 3

The Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder rolled through the Winter Regional to a perfect 5-0 record to sit at the top of the standings with the Red Deer College Kings. Both teams finish the ACAC regular season with an 8-2 record, setting the stage for what should be an entertaining men's event at the ACAC Conference Championships. The NAIT Ooks improved from the Fall Regional with a 3-2 record this time around to qualify for championships, while the championship host University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings come in as the fourth seed with an overall record of 4-6.

  • NAIT Ooks defeated the Olds Broncos 9-7
  • Augustana Vikings defeated the Lakeland Rustlers 8-5

Women's Division – Day 3

Despite suffering their first two losses of the season to the NAIT Ooks and the Red Deer Queens, the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder managed to hold onto the top spot in the regular season standings at 10-2. The Ooks and Queens both dominated the regional with 5-1 records, and sit at 9-3 and 8-4 overall (respectively). The MacEwan University Griffins women will join the party at ACAC Conference Championships to round out the top four after going 3-3 in the regional to finish three games ahead of the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at 7-5 overall.

  • Concordia Thunder defeated the Olds Broncos 7-6
  • MacEwan Griffins defeated the Lakeland Rustlers 6-3

  • NAIT Ooks defeated the MacEwan Griffins 6-4
  • Red Deer Queens defeated the Concordia Thunder 6-5

Mixed Division – Day 3

The NAIT Ooks ran the table over the weekend to an impressive 5-0 record, improving on their 3-2 record from the Fall Regional to sit as the overall #1 seed at 8-2 in the mixed division. Close behind are the MacEwan University Griffins at 7-3 despite taking a slight step back in the shuffling of the regular season standings. The Portage College Voyageurs could not regain their winning touch from the Fall Regional, though finish the regular season at 6-4 and sit as the #3 seed. Rounding out the ACAC Curling Championship qualifiers is Red Deer College who finish at 5-5, and a single game ahead of the Lakeland Rustlers for the last spot.
