Kings withstand Broncos comeback

OLDS, Alta. - The Red Deer College Kings withstood a second half comeback from the Olds College Broncos, eventually taking the 88-76 victory at the Ralph Klein Centre on Friday.

Spencer Klassen had 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Kings (9-8), while Ramiro Martinez Quintanilla Jimenez earned Red Deer's player of the game award with 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists off the bench.

The victory propelled the Kings into sole possession of the final playoff spot in the ACAC South.

Jouvon Edison paced the Broncos (5-11) with 19 points to earn Olds College's player of the game honours, while Landon Parrington picked up a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The teams traded baskets in the contest's opening few minutes, though the Kings gradually pushed forward late to end the first quarter with a 22-17 lead.

The Kings continued their stretch through the first part of the second quarter, eventually totalling a 20-1 run in which the Broncos went without a field goal for approximately nine minutes. Red Deer stretched its lead to as much as 25, eventually taking a 54-32 lead into halftime.

The Broncos chipped away at the deficit for the majority of the third quarter, eventually cutting the lead to 72-58 with 10 minutes to play.

Olds College continued its push back, cutting the Kings lead to nine with 5:07 remaining, though they would get no closer.

The teams will complete the back end of the home-and-home at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer on Saturday at 8 p.m.
