Broncos drop Home Opener to St. Mary’s

Olds College Broncos men's basketball team lost 107-50 to the St. Mary's Lightning in the Broncos Alumni Home Opener game Game Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

St. Mary's came out strong to start the game taking a 15-2 lead before a Muktar Mohamed three-pointer brought the score to 15-5. St. Mary's built on their lead and took a 24-8 lead into the second quarter.

St. Mary's continued to build their lead in the second quarter building up a 42-14 lead half way through the second quarter before building up a 57-18 lead to end the half.

St. Mary's started the second half strong taking a 64-20 lead before Muktar Mohamed hit a nice jump shot to cut the lead to 64-22. Mohamed hit two more baskets moments later to cut the lead to 69-26.Colton Murrell then chipped in with a bank shot off the backboard for another two points for the Broncos to make the score 69-28. Mohamed hit a nice jump shot and then Cody Bouchard hit two three-pointer to cut the lead to 78-36. St. Mary's led 82-36 after three quarters.

Mohamed sunk two free throws for the Broncos three minutes into the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 91-38. Murrell hit a three pointer moments later to cut the score to 91-41. Yallah Sumo had a nice shot around the basket to bring the score to 100-43 before Mohamed had a nice drive to the basket and the and-one to bring the score to 100-46. Mo Eltassi hit a three-pointer with under a minute left and the game ended 107-50 for St. Mary's.

Player of the game for St. Mary's was Alex Cliché who came off the bench to have 16 points and nine rebounds and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Muktar Mohamed with a team high 22 points to go with three rebounds.

St. Mary's held the advantage in the game in field goals 41-19 (on 84 and 79 attempts respectively), three pointers 7-6, free throws 18-6, rebounds 51-37, assists 20-11 and steals 9-4 while both teams had two blocks. Alec Hillman had a team high nine rebounds, two steals and a block and John Kaweesi had a team high three assists.

The Broncos host Red Deer College Friday, Nov. 8 for the Olds College Student Appreciation Game. Game time is 8:00 pm.
