Eklund shines as Broncos comeback falls short against Kings

Olds College Broncos men's basketball team lost 88-75 to the Red Deer College Kings  in the Olds College Appreciation Game Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

http://gobroncos.ca/sports/mbkb/2019-20/photos/IMG_2384_web.jpg Red Deer jumped out to a small lead to start the game before a brilliant bank-shot three by Ben Nelson followed by a pair of Muktar Mohammed lay-ups brought the score to 14-12 for Red Deer. RDC went on a short run to take a 19-12 lead and force a Broncos timeout with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. The teams exchanged baskets with RDC holding a 23-14 as the quarter ended.

The teams started the second quarter scoring fast with RDC extending their lead to 30-16. The Broncos then went on a short run to cut the lead to 33-22, including a circus shot by Ben Nelson at just before the seven minute mark. The teams then exchanged baskets, before the Broncos took a timeout with the score 37-25 for Red Deer. A Broncos three cut the RDC lead to 37-28, but Red Deer responded with a three of their own moments later. Red Deer held a 47-32 lead at halftime.

Red Deer opened the scoring in the second half before a Landon Parrington three made the game 49-35. A great passing play from Ben Nelson to Bailey Walz resulted in a nice layup for Parrington a minute later to make the score 51-37. The Broncos forced a Red Deer timeout as they cut the lead to 51-41. Red Deer came out of the timeout and extended their lead to 56-41 before a Parrington scored a hotly contested layup to end the RDC run. Anders Eklund followed that up to cut the score to 59-45. The teams stalled out on the scoring front until the last minute of the quarter when Colton Murrell cut the score to 61-47 and Red Deer responded with a basket of their own seconds later and the quarter ended 63-51.

The Broncos went on a run to start the fourth quarter, cutting the score to 63-56 forcing the Kings to make several substitutions. The Broncos continued their momentum bringing the score to 63-62 before teams exchanged threes to make the score 68-64. The teams continued to exchange baskets with the Broncos making the score 70-67 before a pair of RDC free throws restored their four point lead, followed by a basket and free throw to bring the score to 74-67 for RDC half way through the quarter. Red Deer continued their run and extended their lead to 81-67. The Broncos took a timeout and cut the score to 81-72 with a pair of Anders Eklund free throws. RDC went on a short run to end the game and won 88-75.

Player of the game for RDC was Kevin Szymanek with 16 points and three rebounds and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Anders Eklund with eight points and three rebounds.http://gobroncos.ca/sports/mbkb/2019-20/photos/IMG_5888_thumb.jpg

The Broncos led the game in assists 8-5 while Red Deer held the edge in rebounds 36-28. Landon Parrington had a team high 21 points and he joined Bailey Walz and Muktar Mohamed with a team high six rebounds, while Walz and Mohamed a team high three assists for the Broncos.

The Broncos are on the road to SAIT next weekend before returning to host Briercrest College January 31 and February 1.
