Lions edge out Clippers in a tight match-up

Caronport, SK. February 7th saw the Briercrest Clippers Men's basketball team hosting the Ambrose University Lions. 

 

Briercrest came in looking to extend their win streak to 4 games. The game was fast paced off the start, with Ambrose up 13-10 in the early minutes. The Lions were good from downtown in the first, sinking multiple three-pointers and extending their lead to 9 points. After the first quarter Ambrose lead 26-19. 

 

Opening the second, the teams went back and forth and with the score at 36-33 Ambrose called a timeout. Out of the break, the Lions outscored the clippers 8-2 and took a 44-35 lead into the second half. 

 

Starting the third quarter, Briercrest opened on a 7-2 run. Ambrose pushed back, but the Clippers continued strong on offence and were led by #11 Brandon Tolentino who made several baskets as the clippers took a 60-58 lead. The Clippers shot excellent from three-point range and the Lions called a timeout with three minutes left in the quarter. After the break, Ambrose came out strong, but Briercrest held them off and took a 74-68 lead into the final quarter. 

 

In the fourth, the Lions battled back and tied the game up at 77. Ambrose took a 4-point lead halfway through the 4th and the Clippers called a timeout. Out of the timeout, Briercrest was strong and tied the game up at 89. With two minutes to go in the game Ambrose had a 98-93 lead and the Clippers called a timeout. They would fall short though, as Ambrose took home the win 100-96. 

 

The player of the game award for the Lions went to #7 Nhial Phillip who recorded 27 Points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks. For Briercrest the award went to #11 Brandon Tolentino who scored 31 points along with 9 rebounds and 3 steals.  

 

After the game, Tolentino had this to say: "They shot really good throughout the first half, we switched things up in the second half and that helped, but we'll get them tomorrow."

 

The Clippers are back in action Saturday afternoon at 3 against Ambrose.
