The last week-end of ACAC hockey this semester featured Briercrest at home to the Concordia Thunder. Both teams began the week-end with 3-7-1 records and evenly matched rosters. It also began the Clipper Hockey alumni week-end and the stands were lined with players from days gone by.
Briercrest started out strong, and controlled the play from the opening faceoff. The Clippers first goal came at the 12 minute mark of the 1st period from captain Josiah Friesen who received a textbook blind pass up the middle from Halen Cordoni. Just 3 minutes later, Cordoni found the back of the net himself and the team went up 2-0. Concordia rallied quickly to end the period 2-1. Shots on goal were 8 -15 for the visitors. Penalties were just one a side.
The second period started much the same as the first. Josiah Friesen scored his second of the game at the halfway mark on the power play. Concordia would not be denied however and scored two quick ones to tie up the game and one more just as the period came to a close and went ahead 4-3 after 2 periods. Shots were consistent with the first - 8 for Briercrest and 16 for Concordia. Power plays were even at two each.
The third period saw a momentum swing and the Thunder came on strong offensively. They scored 4 unanswered goals in the period while denying the Clippers of any. The final score was 8 -3 for the visiting Thunder. Final shots showed 51 for Concordia and 24 for Briercrest.
The same two teams will face off tomorrow again in an afternoon rematch. There will be a special presentation honouring the 40th anniversary of the Nationally ranked 79-80 Clipper hockey team prior to the start of the game. Puck drops at 2pm.
