Briercrest upsets MacEwan for desperately needed points

The second place MacEwan University Griffins rolled into Caronport Friday to take on the Briercrest Clippers who are striving for a playoff position.  Briercrest, coming off two wins on the road last weekend, dressed a short bench due to injuries so a David vs Goliath battle was set.

Joseph Karpyshyn was able to capitalize first and scored unassisted for the Griffins at the midway point of the period. The Clippers were not deterred and at 6:46 captain Josiah Friesen found a bouncing rebound in a scramble in front of the net and scored the equalizer for the Clippers which ignited the crowd.  The period would end in a tie with the Griffins outshooting the home team 15 -11 and only one penalty called against the Clippers.

The second period saw the intensity rise on both sides! Punishing hits, shots blocked, mad scrambles in front of the net but only one goal was scored.  Reagan Poncelet for the Briercrest Clippers made the MacEwan Griffins pay for their only trip to the penalty box and scored the go ahead goal at 16:13.  Shots were 13- 9 in favour of the Griffins and power plays were 3 - 1 in favour of the visitors, but Briercrest did not allow a goal this period.

The third period was amped up as the Griffins dug down deep seeking to solve Briercrest netminder Dan Dekoning's secret to goaltending. But it was Briercrest's Josh Boelema who broke their hearts as he scored the game winner at 8:34. Not a team to give up, the Griffins battled hard and came up with a second goal late in the 3rd.  Pulling their netminder and calling a time out gave them time and opportunity but it was a little too late. They were not able to tie up the game and Briercrest came out victorious 3-2 in regulation time. Again the MacEwan Griffins outshot the Clippers, 14-9.

Total shots for the game were 42 for MacEwan and 29 for the Clippers.  Power play opportunities were 5 - 2 in favour of the Griffins.  Player of the game for MacEwan was #22 Joseph Karpyshyn with one goal and one assist.  For the Clippers, player of the game went to defenseman Jamieson Ree with 2 assists.

The rematch between the two teams will be Saturday at 2:00pm in Caronport, SK
