MSOC | Kodiaks Fall to the Red Deer College Kings

Sept. 8, 2019 - Kodiaks Sunday match up started out with an equal fight, but ended up taking the fall to the Red Deer College Kings in the final score.

The Kodiaks and Kings started the game evenly on the defensive end. The Kodiaks showed an all around great defensive effort in the first half. Kodiaks midfielder #15 Ben Knight created a counterattack on the left wing as he passed through three King's defenders. Ben crossed the ball to teammate #9 Jimmy Buruku as Jimmy had a point blank shot in front of the keeper, however, King's goalkeeper had other plans as he dove to the right side and swatted the ball away with his right away for a corner kick.

The Kodiaks did not get another opportunity until #15 Ben Knight found teammate #7 Sodiq Adekulole all alone as he buried his shot on the left side of the keeper who had no chance to save it. It was 1-0 Kodiaks. The game continued with both teams demonstrating a strong defensive effort on both sides of the field. The Kings responded with a late first half goal as defender #14 Kyle Bett set up teammate #2 Matthew Elpick as Elpick received the cross from Bett and shot the ball right away. Kodiaks goalkeeper Cody Ferguson had both hands on the ball as it looked like he saved it, however, the ball rolled over both his hands into the net. The Kings tied the game 1-1 which remained until the halftime whistle.

The Kings came out with a strong offensive force as they dominated the Kodiak's defensive half right from the beginning of the second half. The Kings kept getting closer and closer to the net. It was until the 52nd minute that midfielder #19 Nathan Swartz set up teammate #8 Hugo Janssen who was found all alone against the Kodiak's keeper. Janssen had no problem putting the ball in on the left side of the net. The kings would take a 2-1 lead.

The Kodiaks tried to respond right away with a free a shot attempt from #15 Ben Knight. The ball went over the upper post. In the 63rd minute during the second half, Kings #8 Hugo Janssen would receive his second yellow card of the game as he was late on a slide tackle delivered to Kodiaks #11 Tyler Bolen. Hugo was sent off and the Kings were down to 10 men.

The Kodiaks took advantage and equalized in the 70th minute as #7 Sodiq Adekulole crossed the ball to teammate #15 Ben Knight who buried the equalizing goal with a low left footed shot to the right side of the net. The Kodiaks tied the game 2-2. The Kodiaks went on to dominate possession but it was the Red Deer Kings who scored the game winning goal in the 83rd minute of the game. The play occurred from a corner kick as #20 Rhys Groenewegen crossed the ball into the middle of the box and teammate #19 Nathan Swartz buried in the header to give the Red Deer Kings the win.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks travel to Calgary next weekend to Ambrose University as they look to bounce back with a win.
