Edmonton, Alberta (October 24, 2019) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Hussein Shabdi of the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder has been named the ACAC Men's North Soccer Coach of the Year.
Hussein had spent the previous four seasons as the assistant coach for the Thunder men's soccer team and was given the opportunity to lead the program as head coach this past summer. Hussein had very little time to recruit athletes this offseason however he was able to bring in the necessary pieces to lead the Thunder back to the postseason. After a very successful regular season, the Thunder have clinched the north second spot finishing the regular season with a record of 8-3-1.
Director of Athletics, Joel Mrak, is very excited to see Hussein thrive in his new role and is very pleased with the direction of the men's soccer program stating, "Hussein has done an exceptional job leading our men's soccer program in his first year as head coach of the program. He has earned the respect of his players and other coaches around the league in a relatively short period, and now has a group of players that are ready to compete hard for him. He has just such a warm and calm demeanour to his approach to coaching soccer that it has been enjoyable to watch him take on this role."
As the number two seed in the ACAC Conference Championships, the Thunder are set to face the Red Deer Kings (South #3) on Friday evening at Emerald Hills Regional Park.
Hussein received the award on Thursday, October 24th, 2019 at the ACAC Men's Soccer Conference Championship Banquet held in Edmonton, AB.
