SHERWOOD PARK, Alta. – The Red Deer College Kings defeated the Concordia Thunder 2-1 in quarter-final action of the 2019 ACAC Men's Soccer Championship.
On day #1 of the ACAC Soccer Championships, they saved the best game for last. Kings and Thunder came to play.
RDC took advantage of having the winter winds of Alberta at their back in the first half. Gabriel Fleury de Queiroz and Nathan Swartz both scored for the Kings in the opening half to give them a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes of play.
The Thunder got the advantage of the wind at their back in the second half. Thunder would try to score while Red Deer would try to hold on with the wind in their faces. Ahmed Abubaker scored immediately after half-time to cut the Kings lead to just one.
"We played three parts of the game well, we knew we had to play the conditions, the score, and our style, and I think we balanced those well. The easy way to put it is we scored more goals with the wind," said RDC head coach Wade Groenewegen van der Weiden. "I'm proud of our team."
One would be all the Thunder would get as the Red Deer College Kings would hold on for the 2-1 victory upsetting the #2 Concordia Thunder. The Kings will now face the SAIT Trojans in the semi-final tomorrow at 6:00 pm.
