SHERWOOD PARK, Alta. – The Red Deer College Kings defeated the SAIT Trojans in penalty kicks on Saturday night in the ACAC semi-finals.
The Kings struck first as Turner Johnson headed home a beautiful corner in the fifth minute of the game. Martin Bertolesi responded for the Trojans at in the 28th minute to tie the game at one.
The second half would be full of action but no goals. Both teams defended well, not wanting to give up a goal. There were several stoppages of play in the half due to small scrums and heightened tempers.
In extra-time, SAIT thought they had won the game when Armando Garcia put a ball pas Trojans keeper Jacob Hamilton. Unfortunately, he was called for a foul before scoring. The Trojans almost won again in the 113th minute, but Hamilton made a brilliant diving save.
This game needed penalty kicks to determine the winner. Hamilton answered the call once again in PK's, making a diving save on Eduardo Filho. That would be the only save of the PK's giving RDC the win and a birth to the gold medal game tomorrow against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.
"We haven't played them well all year, and tonight we did. We played them all over the field, especially in the box which was key for us," said RDC head coach Wade Groenewegen van der Weiden
Players of the game were Turner Johnson for the Kings and Bradley Atherton for the Trojans.
