SHERWOOD PARK, Alta. – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks defeated the Red Deer College Kings 2-0 to claim the title of 2019 ACAC Men's Soccer Champions.
In the final game of the tournament, the snow and wind picked up, making for harsh playing conditions. Both teams came out ready to battle. In the 18th minute, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks opened up the scoring as Owen Beers beat King's keeper Austin Langdon.
In the second half, ACAC Player of the Year Ben Knight sent a high cross into the box, which Jimmy Bukuru drop kicked home to give the Kodiaks a 2-0 lead.
"We wanted to stay solid defensively in the first half going into the wind. We were able to get a bonus goal. In the second half, we just wanted to be smart and responsible, which we were," said Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey.
Both the Kodiaks and the Kings will now head to CCAA Men's Soccer Nationals at Durham College in Oshawa, ON. Nov.6-9.
Players of the game were Ben Knight (Lethbridge) and Kristofer Grobmeier (RDC). Ben Knight was also named to the All-Tournament team along with Owen Beers, Nathan Swartz (RDC), and Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto (RDC). Dave Low from the Kodiaks was named tournament MVP.
