The #1 ranked Lethbridge Kodiaks cruised to a quick victory in the Lions Den on Saturday night, defeating Ambrose in just under an hour of play. Rookie middle Quinn Buchanan (5 kills, 4 digs, 1 block) picked up Player of the Game for the Kodiaks, and libero Peter Hernandez (5 digs) was Player of the Game for the Lions.
Right from the start the Lions had trouble controlling the serve of Lethbridge setter Zach Wikenheiser (17 assists, 4 digs), and the passing troubles ballooned into a 3-11 deficit. Aggressive serving and netplay from the Kodiaks combined with error-heavy Lions play took the opening frame to a speedy 25-12 conclusion.
Lethbridge kept their foot on the gas in the second set, gradually extending their lead until it was 20-10 after a missed serve from Harry Rosewarn (5 kills, 3 digs). Missed serves plagued the Lions throughout this game, committing 12 service errors as well as 16 attacking errors to offset their 16 kills. Dax Whitehead (7 kills, 3 digs) provided the set-winning kill at 24-14, going off the block of Evan Mann (1 kill, 1 dig) and out.
The Lions put a few fresh faces in the lineup to start the third set, including the POG Hernandez and 2nd year leftside Jonny Gerber (2 kills) but the Kodiak defense and scoring ability proved too much to handle for the hometown squad. The lead became 13-3 after a block from Kodiaks outside Michael Kindley (3 kills, 6 digs), and the 10-point spread remained for the rest of the match. Up 24-15, Tony Albizzati tipped the ball off the Ambrose block for the straight-set win.
After a bye next weekend, the Lions will host the Briercrest Clippers (9-11) on February 15-16 in the last weekend of the season. Catch the action live on acactv.ca or make the trip to the Lions Den to see the teams square off in person!
