Ambrose surged ahead in the first set (7-1) thanks to the strong serving of #2 Stephen Jones. Multiple aces in conjunction with Briercrest errors contributed to this early start, and the Lions continued to battle point for point as the set progressed. Unfortunately, when the Lions were up 20-18, Jones was subbed out due to an injury and the Lion's experienced a shift in momentum that would carry on for the rest of the game.
When speaking to Lions head coach Paul Armbruster on how losing Jones affected the game, he said "Stephen has been a significant piece to our team offensively and from the service line and he also brings a maturity to the group so it is a loss not having Stephen 3 of the last 4 games but hopefully we can get him feeling 100% and back into the lineup". Ambrose struggled to build momentum in the following sets as they made errors at key moments, while Briercrest managed to eliminate their errors almost entirely. Due to a number of injuries for the Lions, Armbruster tried to create a spark through creative substitutions trying to find that right balance on the floor.
Outside hitter Nikita Marchenkov challenged the Briercrest block on a number of occasions, earning the highest number of kills for the Lions. He also led his team in digs and was awarded player of the game. #15 Bryton Codd took home player of the game for Briercrest.
