February 2, 2019 – The Kodiaks returned to home territory to take on the Ambrose Lions in the second game of a home-and-home weekend series as the Kodiaks looked to recreate their win from the game in Ambrose.
The Kodiaks came out flat with a scoreless first five minutes of the quarter as the Lion stole an early 9-0 lead. Lions Kariya Bruised Head dominated the court until the Kodiaks found their footing and made an impressive comeback, largely guided by a 10-point streak from Jocelyn Neilson to take the quarter 17-14.
Hoping to continue their momentum the Kodiaks came out strong in the second quarter, but the Lions were not ready to give in, maintaining constant pressure on the Kodiaks. Matlin McMurray came alive for the Kodiaks with 5 points and 2 assists in the quarter as the Kodiaks powered their way through to a 30-22 lead heading into the half.
The third quarter moved slowly with Nielsen leading the court with 4 points. Both teams defense held their own but the Kodiaks managed to maintain their lead to head into the final quarter with a score of 35-26.
Kodiaks head coach looked to change the pace of the game early in the fourth quarter with a full team substitution. The move seemed to work as the Kodiaks picked up their intensity in the final minutes of the game, sealing a 46-36 victory.
With this win the Kodiaks advance to 12-5 in the season, while the Lions fall to 3-15. The Kodiaks are back in action at home on February 15th as they take on the Briercrest Clippers.
