A Strong 2nd Quarter, leads to Lightning Victory

Tonight saw the 5-5 St. Mary's Lightning take on the 1-7 Ambrose Lions in a battle between two local Calgary Universities.

The Lions came out fighting to start the game, quickly taking the lead 19-12 after the first quarter.  That would be as big as of lead the Lions would be able to get in the game however as to start the 2nd quarter, the Lightning really found their groove offensively.   St. Mary's took advantage of former Lightning being out, Nya Gach, as they scored a lot of points off of backdoor passes into the paint resulting in easy layups.  St. Mary's also managed to grab 18 Offensive rebounds resulting in a total of 23 second chance points compared to Ambrose's 6.

At halftime, the Lightning saw their 7 point deficit become a 10 point lead.

The Lions would find a way to keep things even in the 3rd and even push back in the 4th to make the game interesting as in the final few moments, they got back to within 8, however it was too little, too late for the Lions tonight.

Player of the game awards were presented to Sarah Burnell for the Lions, who led the Lions in points, steals and rebounds, while for the Lightning, Hannah Helton was presented the award thanks to her game high 22 points scored.
