Broncos sink an ACAC record tying 17 three-pointers in win over Queens

With an ACAC single game record tying 17 made three-point shots, the Olds College Broncos women's basketball team defeated the Red Deer College Queens 100-64 in the Olds College Appreciation Game Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Ralph Klein Centre. The Broncos jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Red Deer scored a three-pointer, which the Broncos responded with a three of their own to bring the score to 13-3. The teams exchanged baskets, with Brandi Thibeaux hitting two straight threes to bring the score to 21-5 for Olds. The Broncos forced a Red Deer timeout and the teams exchanged baskets to end the first quarter 29-13.

The Broncos continued to increase their lead raising it to 36-15 three minutes into the second quarter. The teams exchanged baskets until a Michaela Allen-Gullion scored a three coming out of a Red Deer timeout to increase the Broncos lead to 56-24.

The Broncos took a 58-28 lead into halftime with Brandi Thibeaux having a game high 17 points.

The Red Queens opened up the scoring in the second half before the Broncos responded with a basket to make the score 61-30 a minute into the second half. The teams scored in bunches over the next minute with the Red Deer cutting the lead to 63-35 before a Brandi Thibeaux exchanged threes with Red Deer. The Broncos took a timeout with Red Deer playing strong defense and cutting the lead to 78-47. Red Deer cut the Broncos lead to 78-51 out of the timeout. The Broncos and Queens exchanged points 82-53

The fourth quarter began with the Broncos extending their lead to 92-57 and forcing a Red Deer timeout. Red Deer cut the lead to 93-61 before Brittney Thibeaux extended the lead to 98-61 off two nice baskets. Haylee-Jo Heggie extended the lead to 100-64 moments later which was how the game ended.

Player of the game for RDC was Lauren Cardinal with a team high 18 points four rebounds and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Brandi Thibeaux with a game high 33 points, seven assists and eight rebounds.

The Broncos led the game in rebounds 35-25, assists 24-14, and steals and blocks 1-0. Along with Brandi Thibeaux's game leading stats Brittney Thibeaux had the lone steal for Olds and Michaela Allen-Gullion had a the lone block for the Broncos.

The Broncos are on the road to SAIT next weekend before returning to host Briercrest College January 31 and February 1.
