EDMONTON, ALTA. - The NAIT Ooks score three goals in 33 seconds to defeat the Olds Broncos 4-3 in ACAC women's hockey action on Saturday night in the NAIT Arena.
In what would begin as a relatively uneventful game, ended in a very exciting way. For the first two periods, neither teams were able to generate any offense.
Heading into the third period in a 0-0 tie, something had to give. Shauna Johnson gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead 1:33 into the final frame on the powerplay. Megan Quesnell followed it up eight minutes later to put Olds up 2-0 with ten minutes to play. Jordan McMillan finally got the Ooks on the board shortly after bringing the game to 2-1. Mairyn Tucker then responded for the Broncos to make it 3-1 with seven minutes to play. Then at the 17:55 mark of the final period the Ooks caught fire. Megan Leblanc scored (17:55) followed by Cass Lyttle (18:15), then Rebecca Roszell (18:28) to give the Ooks a 4-3 lead and eventually the win.
"Olds put forth an incredible effort tonight and had us on our heels for the majority of the game. It was evident that we were tired tonight, Olds found a way to capitalize multiple times," said Ooks' head coach, Stef Thomson. "My absolute favorite thing about this team is our resiliency. Our third period, especially the last 5 minutes of the game, we showed true character. The fact that we scored three goals in 33 seconds was incredible. There's a good possibility that we may face Olds in the first round of playoffs, so this was an important weekend for us to measure where we are at with playoffs so close."
