RDC Queens strike shorthanded, down visiting SAIT Trojans

Red Deer, AB - It looked like the Red Deer College Queens and SAIT Trojans would need more than 60 minutes to determine a winner Friday evening.

While the Trojans were on a power play with time expiring, the home team managed to capitalize on a shorthanded opportunity, earning a 1-0 decision.

Goaltending and defence were on full display at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Queens netminder Karlee Fetch and Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenberg were solid in between the pipes. Both were unbeatable until 19:25 of the third period.

While killing a penalty, Queens forward Mary Hirsch tipped a puck ahead to teammate Avery Lajeunnesse. The first-year from Red Deer sped into the SAIT zone and beat Schellenberg on the blocker side.

As time ticked down, Schellenberg was pulled for the extra skater, but Fetch and the Queens held off the six-on-four attack for the home win.

Fetch and Schellenberg were recognized as the Players-of-the-Game.

SAIT outshot RDC 27-21.

Both teams went zero-for-four on the power play.

On Saturday, the SAIT Trojans (4-14-1-0) will entertain the RDC Queens (13-4-2-0) at 7:00 pm in Calgary.
