CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 26, 2018) - Non-stop pressure helped the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder Friday afternoon.
The Thunder scored twice in the first half, and added two more in the second as they rolled to a 4-1 victory over the Red Deer College Queens in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Soccer Championship quarter-final game played at SAIT's Cohos Commons Field.
The Thunder now move on to the event's semifinal on Saturday afternoon where they will meet the NAIT Ooks at 2pm.
Concordia drew first blood just 15 minutes in when Rebecca Leavell took advantage of a mishandle ball by Queens keeper Erin Gill and fired it into the net to make it 1-0. Eight minutes later, Gabby Bayne made it 2-0 off a great corner kick from Paige Martin in which she deftly re-directed the airborne ball into the net.
Martin scored her own goal in the second half, again off a corner kick, but her own to send the Thunder fans into an uproar.
Red Deer cut the lead to 3-1 when Natasha Saleem was sent in all alone, and beat Thunder goalkeeper Selina Verkland.
The Thunder didn't wait long to restore their lead when Hayat Abubaker pounced on a loose ball and found the back of the net to ice the win.
