Sept. 8, 2019 - The Lethbridge College Kodiaks open their season at home by earning a six point weekend.
The Kodiaks and Queens started the game off with even possession as the Queens created several chances to go upfront. Goalkeeper Micaela Stone was rock solid by saving most shot attempts from Queens forwards #11 Natalie Frenette and #19 Ashley Thomson. In the 9th minute of the first half, the Queens were trying to clear the ball as Kodiaks forward #5 Ashley Sazalski interfered a pass from the Queens Defense and buried her shot as she tricked the Queens Goalkeeper Alethea Riemer to the right side. Kodiaks took the 1-0 lead.
It did not take long for the Kodiaks to add to their lead. In the 15th minute, Kodiaks defender #10 Ailsa Fallows cleared the ball from the defensive end as her pass made its way to Kodiaks forward #5 Ashley Sazalski. Sazalski took a shot that Queens goalkeeper Alethea Riemer got hands on but the shot was strong enough to roll over into the net. Ashley added her second goal of the game.
The Kodiaks offence gained confidence from these goals as they dominated the Queen's defensive half. It was almost a hat trick display from Kodiaks forward #5 Ashley Sazalski as she created a breakaway into the Queen's half, but goalkeeper Alethea Riemer robbed Ashley from getting her hat trick with a diving safe to the right side of the net. Ashley's night would come to an end as she was forced to come off with a leg injury in the 27th minute of the first half. The scoreline would remain 2-0 at the halftime whistle.
The second half started with both teams displaying defensive efforts, there were no shot attempts until the 57th minute of the half. Kodiaks striker #22 Olivia DePasquale ran through two defenders and as she created a counterattack from the right side, as she crossed it, the goalie got a hand of the ball but was not able to grab it completely as the ball went over her hands and Kodiaks substitution #4 Jasmin Salmon took advantage of the keeper's mistake and buried in the tap in. It was 3-0 Kodiaks in the 61st minute of the second half. The Kodiaks kept good composure for the rest of the game and came out with a 3-0 win to finish a perfect 6-point weekend at home.
The Lethbridge College Kodiaks travel to Calgary next weekend to take on the Ambrose University Lions as they look to remain perfect.
