Sherwood Park, Alta. – The SAIT Trojans defeated the King's Eagles in the opening match of the 2019 ACAC Women's Soccer Championship at Emerald Hills Sports Pavilion.
The game started even on both sides, with neither getting many scoring opportunities until Mackenzie Georgsen managed to walk through the King's defender and tuck a beautiful shot just under the crossbar giving the Trojans a 1-0 in the 38th minute.
The Eagles' Kaleigh Greidanus tapped home a stellar cross from Gabriella Rocque in the 58th minute to tie the game at 1. 65th-minute SAIT would retake the lead as Skye Gordon scored on a penalty kick.
The Eagles pushed back hard, putting shot after shot on net desperately trying to tie the game and keep their season alive. Still, Trojans keeper Stine Thorne made save after save to her team's victory, sending them to the semi-finals where they will face the #1 seed NAIT Ooks.
"There will be no greater challenge than the one we face tomorrow," said SAIT head coach John Talerico. "We just have to approach it the same way we did with King's, and that's just to play and keep playing. This team just gets closer and closer with each passing day, and I have enjoyed watching it. Saturday will be fun."
The Trojans and Ooks will kickoff at 11:00 am on Sunday, with the winner moving on to the Championship game on Sunday.
