Queens claim bronze at ACAC volleyball championship

The Red Deer College Queens swept the Ambrose College Lions in three sets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19 to win the bronze medal at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Championship at Lakeland College on Saturday evening.

After defeating the NAIT Ooks in the first game of the eight-team championship, the Queens lost to the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves in the second round, ending up in the bronze-medal game against a south division opponent in the Lions.

Since the start of the 2010-11 season the Queens have now won three bronze medals and two gold medals. In 2012-13 they lost in the third-place game and last season they finished fifth at the ACAC championship.

The four seed Lions provided the shock of the tournament beating the top seeded King's University Eagles in the first round before losing to the Lakeland College Rustlers in the second round.

Julia Kemper led the Lions with eight kills and Queens left-side Miranda Dawe had 16 kills for the victorious Queens.

Dawe was the player of the game for the bronze-medal winners.  The player of the game for the fourth-place Lions was libero Brooklyn Dyck.
