Serrano enjoying summer volleyball season in Calgary’s Premier League

Third-year Olds College Broncos women's volleyball student-athlete Clara Serrano has been enjoying volleyball against strong competition this summer as she has been competing in the Calgary Premier League (premiervolleyballleague.org) this summer.

This summer is the first year for the Premier League in Calgary, after this format began in Toronto summer 2017.

Serrano has been enjoying her experience in the league this summer.

"There are a few familiar faces in the league like Veronica Headley (SAIT), Miranda Dawe (RDC Alumni), Maddy Williscroft (Ambrose University) and Megan Brennan (SAIT Alumni), but I am the only Bronco playing," Serrano explained. "I was drafted to play for Trolley 5 HITT Venom coached by Ernie Tsu and Carsten Stanjek! We played on Monday's in June and Tuesday's starting in July at SAIT and you can find the schedule on the Premier Volleyball League website, but we also stream our games live via YouTube on their channel so anyone can watch!"

"So far the experience has been amazing and it's been really cool to work and play against both current/alumni of the national team, pro teams, USPORT and ACAC/CCAA players," Serrano continued! "It's really cool to have been part of the inaugural year and I'm really excited to see how it expands in the future! I'm also excited to bring some more knowledge back to the (Ralph Klein Centre) gym when school starts back up again in the fall!"

Serrano and the Venom are currently ranked second in the league with one game remaining in the regular season. They play Tuesday, July 17 against JVC Reign at 8:00 pm and then playoffs begin are July 24 and the finals July 28. All games are at SAIT in Calgary.

More information on the Premier League:

The Premier League was established in 2017 in Toronto to launch professional volleyball in Canada and provide elite competition to our best post-secondary athletes.

The league is made up of current and former professional athletes, national team members and top NCAA, USport and CCAA players

The Calgary Premier League was launched in 2018 and will mirror it's Toronto counter-part with four men's and four women's teams competing over the course of 2 months culminated by the Premier Cup Finals. Athletes are selected to teams through an athlete draft"

An overview of the draft:

"Team names are drawn at random from a hat. The first team name drawn receives the first draft pick, the fourth name drawn receives the fourth pick, as well as the fifth as the draft is snaked. Teams have one (1) minute to make their selection in that round of picks. Once the teams are selected, all athletes who applied to the draft will be notified in writing whether or whether not they have been selected to a team."
