The Lions jumped out to a strong start in their home opener, taking the game in straight sets over the visiting Medicine Hat Rattlers. 2nd year middle Willow Lewington was the night's Player of the Game, and the victory brings the Lions' record to an even 1-1.
The first set saw Ambrose battle with the visiting Rattlers and take a healthy 20-15 lead halfway through the set. Medicine Hat fought back with contributions from rightside Brooke Christie and star leftside Amber Stigter, while their All-Conference libero Shaya Suchy carried the defensive load. Up by only one point with the set on the line, Maddy Williscroft sent a leftside swing off the Rattlers block to take the opener 25-23.
Spurred on by the close victory, Ambrose took control of the second set and found themselves up 13-4. Despite some inspired play by the visiting Rattlers to cut down the lead, led by the blocks and kills of Rattlers POG Megan Hoeber out of the middle, the Lions went up 2-0 after an overpass kill by Lewington finished the set at 25-19.
The third and final set was a much closer contest, as the Lions fought to come back from an early deficit and held a slim lead halfway through the set. A hitting error from Lions leftside Julia Kemper tied the score at 21-21, before a few untimely service errors from the visitors put the Lions up 24-22. On match point, a Rattlers attacker grazed the net and sealed it up in three sets for the home team, 25-23. This make four victories in a row against the Rattlers for the Lions, who will be trying to make it five Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm in Medicine Hat.
