Nov. 23, 2018 – The Kodiaks women's volleyball team's early season slump continued on Friday night, as they team fell to the Olds College Broncos in straight sets (25-21, 25-16, 25-15).
After winning their first game, Lethbridge has now lost their last ten matches.
The Broncos entered the game winless in ten contests but clearly came prepared to put their first win on the board.
Lethbridge actually took an early lead but Olds turned the game around coming out of a timeout. The Broncos roared back to tie the game at 18, then won seven of the next ten points to stun the Kodiaks and take an early lead.
The Kodiaks were unable to stop the tilted court early in set two, with Olds racing out to an 8-1 advantage. Despite a medley of different lineup arrangements, Lethbridge couldn't climb back from the big deficit while falling 25-16.
Determined to finish off their first win, the Broncos eventually pulled away from the Kodiaks midway through the third set. Strong serving and Kodiaks errors helped the Broncos build a 15-11 lead, and Olds rattled off ten of the final fourteen points to finish off the match.
The powerful tandem of Morgan Gleddie and Jailyn Bayle led the Broncos offence with nine kills. Clara Serrano had 16 digs.
Mackenzie Lewicki led the Kodiaks with six kills, while veteran Laura Serafini had five. Andie Curran and Morgan Bullerwell were sharp with eight digs each for the hosts.
Avery Gammel earned player of the game for Olds with 26 assists, while Grace Kazanowski took home the honour for the Kodiaks.
Both teams now sport records of 1-10 and will play a rematch tomorrow afternoon at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
