Ambrose falls to visiting Briercrest in 4

It was a full house tonight as fans from all over gathered to cheer on the Ambrose Lions as they took on Briercrest College. The match was characterized by long rallies with aggressive hitting and heroic saves from both teams.   From the start, the Lions played seamlessly, their defense led by #3 libero Journey Flewell and an aggressive offense from #5 Julia Kemper and #6 Maddy Williscroft.  This overall control and energy brought a first set win for the Lions.

In the second set, Briercrest regained control over the momentum and energy of the game, largely generated by a number of huge blocks.  The game stayed close however as Briercrest narrowly claimed the second set.  Set three continued the trend that emerged in set 2 as Briercrest continued to have strong blocks and Ambrose struggled to regain momentum.  The Lions got their mojo back in the fourth, maintaining a gradual lead until 17-15 when, following a time out from Briercrest coach Nolan Weinmaster, Briercrest got a couple of high energy points and tied the set 20-20.  In the last few points of the game, 5th year Briercrest player Becky Garner earned her 1000th career kill. Briercrest won the game 3 sets to 1.

Player of the game for Briercrest was awarded to #12 Faith Buhler, and #3 Journey Flewell claimed it for the Lions.  When speaking with Lions coach Colin Kubinec at the end of the night, he said "The game really ebbed and flowed with the serve-pass battle.  When we served tough, we were able to minimize Briercrest's strong offence, and when they passed well they were tough to stop.  We are looking forward to rising up to a new day and challenge tomorrow".
