Nowicki and Chesoo Top Podium Finish in First Grand Prix

EDMONTON AB – The 2019 ACAC Cross Country Running season kicked off on Saturday, September 7th, 2019 with the first Grand Prix series race, sponsored by the Running room, hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder.

The beautiful sunny day, ranging between 15-20 degree weather proved to be a worth challenge to just over 60 student-athletes competing in the first race of the season. The course featured a 3KM loop and a 2KM loop containing a mixture of hard packed gravel, grass and dirt trails. 4 different races were ran this morning/afternoon, a shorter 2km and 4km race for younger runners or those looking for a quick time trailed race, and a 6km and 8km race that comprised of student athletes and 'open runners' who were able to join without representing a school.

On the women's side, it was Sophia Nowicki (Lethbridge College) who took the top spot at the podium with a time of 23:40, finishing almost 30 seconds ahead of 2nd place Ana Zulic from CUE, who edged out Rosie Bouchard by roughly 20 seconds.

In the men's race, the CUE Thunder took the top of the podium, with Leonard Chesoo crossing the finish line with a time of 25:01, who finished just over a minute ahead of the second place finisher Machio Green from the UAA with a time of 27:04, and Brant Lauwergseen from SAIT rounded off the podium with a time of 27:04.
