ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Kendall Russell, showed up with two blacks eyes and a fat lip, then delivered a statement week for the Lightning, putting together back-to-back offensive explosions that helped propel the team into the top tier of the conference standings.

On January 23 against Ambrose, Russell was locked in from the opening tip, finishing with 22 points, three steals, and four rebounds while knocking down five three-pointers in a convincing 72–55 win. Her shooting stretched the defense all night and set the tone for a dominant home performance.

She followed that up the next night on the road with an even bigger showing, pouring in 32 points to go along with six steals, four assists, and three rebounds. Russell was on fire from all over the court, surpassing both 850 career points and 150 career three-pointers in the process. Her scoring punch and defensive pressure were pivotal in securing a second straight win over Ambrose, a sweep that vaulted the Lightning into second place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association South Division.

Russell is a fifth-year guard in the Liberal Arts program from Strathmore, Alberta.

GLIMPSE AHEAD

The Lightning return home this weekend to host the Briercrest Clippers for a pivotal two-game series at Glenmore Christian Academy, with the Clippers currently sitting atop the ACAC South Division. With first place on the line, a Lightning sweep would secure the right to host the women’s playoffs—making it a high-stakes weekend with postseason implications written all over it.
