Fountain & Zdybek Honoured as 2016-17 Men's Volleyball Rookies of the Year
RED DEER, AB. (Feb. 22, 2017) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce that Bryan Fountain of the Briercrest College Clippers (South Division) and Jakub Zdybek of the Keyano College Huskies (North Division) have been selected as the 2016-17 ACAC Men's Volleyball Rookies of the Year.
Fountain helped Briercrest to a 13-11 record to re-enter the playoffs after a two-year absence. The first year BA General Studies student was an overall stand-out for Briercrest this year, ranking third on the team with 106 kills, 11 assists, 23 service aces, and 79 digs, while landing fourth on the team for points with 142.5.
"Having Bryan on our team this year has been a great opportunity to work with a player that has a true love for the game," said Clippers Head Coach Nigel Mullan about the Barrhead, AB product. "He has done everything that has been asked of him. He approaches practices and games with a desire to get better with every rep. Bigger than that he has a joy for life and that comes through with every interaction he has with teammates, coaches, and anyone else who gets to be around him. He is beyond his years with his approach and that has allowed him to be effective in his first year with us."
As for the South Division Rookie of the Year, Jakub Zdybek earns his title with an impressive 106 kills for a 2.21 kills per set average in the 16 matches and 48 sets he appeared in this season. He also totaled 20 service aces for a 0.42 per set average, which was eighth best in the ACAC. With 20 solo blocks and 46 digs, his points per set average was 3.1, which was second highest on the team for players that had appeared in more than 45 sets.
Zdybek is one of three international student/athletes from Poland on the Huskies 2016-2017 roster. His talents and team play were integral in the Keyano College Huskies recording their best-ever record in the ACAC with 22 matches won, 2 matches lost.
Fountain and Zdybek received the awards on Feb. 22, 2017 at the ACAC Men's Volleyball Conference Championship Banquet held in Red Deer, Alta.
