Sandy Heim Honoured as 2016-17 ACAC Women’s Hockey Player of the Year
EDMONTON, AB (March 4, 2017) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Sandy Heim of the MacEwan University Griffins has been selected as the 2016-17 ACAC Women's Hockey Player of the Year. Sponsored by CCM Hockey.
Heim was not only the busiest goaltender in the ACAC, with a league-high 534 saves in 22 games played this season, she was the best, leading the conference in goals against average (1.45), save percentage (.943) and wins (10). She is currently riding a shutout streak of 168:48 into the ACAC finals after stopping 131 of 134 shots in a semifinal series win over Red Deer.
"Sandy's stats this season speak directly to the impact she has had on our success," said MacEwan Griffins head coach Lindsay McAlpine. "Her consistency has allowed us to develop our game as a young team, which has been instrumental in our opportunity to play for an ACAC Championship. She is a player that strives for excellence every time she steps on the ice. She is methodical in how she breaks the game down, as well as her own specific movements. I look forward to watching Sandy develop into an Olympic-level goaltender over the next few years."
The second-year Accounting/Strategic Measurement student-athlete came to the Griffins in 2015 from Wilderswil, SUI, where she is on the radar of the Swiss women's national hockey team. Heim has been named to the ACAC first all-star team in both of her seasons with MacEwan.
The prestigious player of the year award was presented to Heim prior to Game 1 of the 2017 ACAC Women's Hockey Championship on Saturday, March 4 at Edmonton's Downtown Community Arena.
