Badminton Tournament #3 Recap

Edmonton, AB – NAIT Athletics hosted the ACAC Badminton Tournament #3 on February 2nd at the NAIT Gymnasium. The teams of the NAIT Ooks,  SAIT Trojans, TKU Eagles and CUE Thunder, braved freezing temperatures to gather for a day of fierce competition and exciting rivalry.  

 

Men's Singles

Smit Patel of NAIT won the Men's Singles category, besting Hossein Ahmadi from Kings in the final. These two sensational players have been battling for that top spot all season long, with Ahmadi winning this category in two tournaments. This weekend's match-up was tight, as Patel narrowly bested his cross-town rival.

Women's Singles

The Women's Singles category saw a flipped top two from the men, as Melissa Roque of Kings placed first above NAIT's Khushi Vaniya. These two familiar foes have been battling for supremacy all season with Roque having a dominating performance this past weekend, besting Vaniya in two straight games, 21-5 and 21-17.

Men's Doubles

It was another big win for the King's Eagles as Hossein Ahmadi and Mahdi Ahmadi clinched the win in two games against the SAIT Trojans. Despite the final loss, Carl Canillo and Paul Ouano of SAIT improved one spot from the previous tournament where they placed 3rd.

Women's Doubles

With their only first place of the weekend, SAIT's Ziyu Kong and Archelle Ouano soared as they bested NAIT in two games, 21-12 and 21-13. NAIT's Noel Do and Samantha Tran must look to ACAC Provincials for another chance to beat the seemingly undefeatable Kong and Ouano.

Mixed Doubles

Mahdi Ahmadi and Melissa Roque of the King's Eagles took first place in mixed doubles, besting Davis Wong and Khushi Vaniya of the NAIT Ooks. However, all was not lost for the Ooks as their second-place finish was their best of tournament play so far this season.
