North Golf Regional - Round 1

LAC LA BICHE, AB – Sometimes appearances can be deceiving. On a sunny, warm and not too windy Saturday, golfers from post-secondary institutions across Alberta found out that the Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club may look idyllic with its vistas and lakeviews, but playing it is another story. A common refrain after the first round of the two-day ACAC Golf Regional (North) was that the course played tough, in many cases tougher than players were used to.

"It was a beautiful day," said Regan Colberg, who fired an opening round 85 playing in his first tournament ever for SAIT.  "It was just tough out there, though. The trees along the fairway can be daunting after you lose one or two but it's a tough course for sure. It's a lot more closed than the courses that I'm used to, that's for sure. I think I only counted two holes other than the par threes that you can see the pin from the tee box. So a lot of blind shots makes it tough. I'm not used to that."

Colberg and his teammates from SAIT led the Men's team competition after Day 1, two strokes ahead of Medicine Hat College. On the Men's Individual competition, Dylan Gunderson shot a four-over-par 76 to lead fellow SAIT golf Gavin Hawryluk by one stroke.

John Bartman, a sophomore member of Medicine Hat College's men's squad, agreed that the course was challenging, particularly for those who hadn't played it before.

"This is about the exact opposite of the usual course I play on, " he said. "This one is tight and requires you to shape the ball both ways and the greens are really, really hard to hit it close on. None of which is how the course that I've played most of my rounds at looks like."

Team-wise after the first day, SAIT was solidly in first place on the Women's Team side of the ledger, leading second-place Concordia by 33 strokes.

Final round action begins Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Bartman noted it was great to have a full golf schedule this year, without all the restrictions that plagued last year's ACAC golf schedule – even if his first day was a bit rough.

"It should be fun to play two rounds in a tournament tomorrow but we'll see how the rest of the weekend goes, " he quipped.
