North Golf Regional - Day 1 Results
LAC LA BICHE, AB – Sometimes appearances can be deceiving. On a sunny, warm and not too windy Saturday, golfers from post-secondary institutions across Alberta found out that the Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club may look idyllic with its vistas and lakeviews, but playing it is another story. A common refrain after the first round of the two-day ACAC Golf Regional (North) was that the course played tough, in many cases tougher than players were used to.
Portage College's Lyric Lewis, a member at the club, definitely had home course advantage on the women's side. She shot an opening round 98 to sit fourth on the Women's Individual side after Day 1. She joked that the score seemed very familiar to her.
"Honestly, I've shot this exact score plenty of times so it was pretty normal today so hopefully tomorrow's better," she laughed, adding that the secret to a better round will be staying out of the bush.
Ella Gifford of Concordia University of Edmonton shot the round of the day on the Women's Individual side, firing an 88 to lead by five strokes. She enjoyed her round, even if there were a few hiccups along the way.
"It was definitely challenging just because off the tee if you sprayed it at all it kind of penalized you, every hole almost," she said. "Once you figured out like that the driver is not always the play off the tee and you kind of got into your groove, it was not too bad."
Team-wise after the first day, SAIT was solidly in first place on the Women's Team side of the ledger, leading second-place Concordia by 33 strokes.
