North Regional Women's Golf Day 2 Results

LAC LA BICHE, AB - Consistency paid off for Ella Gifford on Sunday. Coming off an impressive first-round 88, the Concordia University of Edmonton golfer almost mirrored her first-round score at the ACAC Golf Regional (North) at the Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club, firing an 89 to finish 12 strokes ahead of her nearest competitor, Kristine Dixon of SAIT. After a bit of a rough start, she recovered to hold on to the lead to the finish at the first tournament of the year.

"The first four holes were very tough," said Gifford. "I started off very weak but once I got into my rhythm it was a bit better. It was super hot out but I can't really complain about that. It was really nice."

Having a round under her belt gave her a bit more confidence to face the course on Sunday, a course that many of the participants labelled tough due to its small greens and sometimes narrow fairways.

"I would definitely say for putting the greens the knowledge from yesterday definitely helped," said Gifford. "Not a lot but marginally. It was pretty good."

In the Women's Team competition, SAIT took first place, finishing 26 strokes better than nearest competitor Medicine Hat College.

The golfers will hit the links again next weekend in Medicine Hat, at the ACAC Golf Regional (South) before heading to provincials Sept. 23-25. Despite the challenges presented by the Lac La Biche course, Gifford and many of her competitors expressed their gratitude to be able to play a full golf schedule once again.

"It's nice to play in a tournament again.," said Gifford. "I can't say that I've done a lot of that over the summer so it's definitely different playing in a tournament compared to just recreational so it'll definitely help going forward."
