Strong 2nd Half Leads To Lions Victory
The Ambrose University Lions didn't let a bad second quarter get in their way and bulldozed through the final two quarters to finish off the St.Mary's Lightning 89-77 to sweep their season series.
After a close fight the evening before on the road, the Lions used a sellout crowd on their home floor and the right second half adjustments to score 59 points and solidify their second position in the ACAC South Division.
Lions coach Neil Nystrom said there was anger displayed during the halftime chat as they were not good enough in the first 20 minutes. "We left a lot of shooters open and they are a great shooting team, especially with threes. So we needed to pick up our intensity."
Jordan Britton and Cordell Minnifee of the Lightning both had excellent first halves but were shut down and frustrated later due to the Lions' tactical changes.
"We tried to run them off the three-point line and forced them to drive and see if we could help each other inside."
Britton ended with 25 points while Australian import Riley Cordwell, with his family in the gym and others watching online, wowed the crowd with 20 points and eight defensive rebounds.
The Lightning (3-11) host Briercrest (2-11) next weekend in a back-to-back, while the Lions (10-5) have a single road game in Medicine Hat (9-6) where the pursuit of playoff spots will continue.
