Lion's Claim First Victory of the Season
The men's game was explosive from the start as both teams fought to start on top. In the first three minutes Briercrest was up 8-2 but Ambrose battled back to be within 2 points at the end of the first quarter and tied at half. Brolin Simes and Nicholas Gregerson both shot really well from 3 (4/6 and 4/7 respectively) keeping their team in it with clutch baskets every time Ambrose tried to extend their lead. Gregerson also tied with teammate Brandon Tolentino in most points scored with 16. Offensively the Lions were led by Isaac Grey and Linden Jackson who both scored 23 points. While the Lions were out-rebounded 41-33, new addition Nhial Phillip was a strong presence in the paint scoring 13 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Overall the Lions shot 51.5% compared to a Briercrest field goal percentage of 43.5%. As the game wore on, a shorthanded Briercrest team (due to some key injuries in the preseason) ran into some foul trouble in the fourth quarter and were unable to gain momentum in the loud Ambrose gym. In the end, the Lions won 90-82. Player of the game from Briercrest was Brandon Tolentino who picked up his first double double of the season. Player of the game for the Lions was Isaac Grey who carried his momentum from the 2018-2019 season with a strong offensive game.
