STMU strikes like lightning
Caronport, SK. January 24th saw the Briercrest Clippers Men's basketball team hosting the St.Mary's Lightning.
The Clippers were riding a 4-game win streak heading in and were looking to keep rolling. The teams went back and forth, with the score tied up at 11 five minutes through the quarter. St.Mary's would pull ahead later in the quarter and took a 24-18 lead into the second.
To start the 2nd quarter, Briercrest came out strong and cut the lead to three. However, St.Mary's played strong defence and good 3-point shooting from them saw St.Mary's take a 58-42 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the clippers chipped away at the lead, cutting the defecit to 10, down 64-54. St.Mary's closed the quarter strong though, and extended their lead to 14 points. Heading into the final quarter up 72-58.
In the fourth, the teams traded buckets, and Briercrest called a timeout down 76-62. Coming out of the timeout, it was equally matched for the remainder of the quarter. Foul trouble and good shooting from the lightning gave them a 12-point advantage with 2 minutes left. They would hold on and take the win 87-74.
Presenting the player of the game awards was Jason Wendel, for Briercrest it went to #15 Carter Martens who 12 Points and 5 Rebounds. For St.Mary's the player of the game was #7 Ryan Morck who put up 25 points along with 6 rebounds.
After the game, Martens had this to say about the game: "We were missing Nelka, and that was pretty detrimental on the glass, which hurt us a lot, they're pretty big. We just couldn't get back, but we will get them tomorrow".
The Clippers are back in action tomorrow, with the women playing at 1pm and the men at 3pm.
