Trojans barely scrape out win over Clippers

Caronport, SK. February 29th saw the Briercrest Men's Basketball team hosting the SAIT Trojans. 

 

The Clippers were looking to get the win after Friday's 90-72 loss to SAIT. In the first quarter, the Clippers opened strong from three, taking an early 10-6 lead in the opening minutes. Briercrest pushed their lead to 9, however SAIT would close the gap to just 1, down 27-26 after the first. 

 

In the second, the teams went back and forth at each other in an evenly matched quarter throughout. At the end of the second, the Trojans lead the Clippers by a slight margin, up 48-46 heading into the break. 

 

In the third it was much of the same, with multiple lead changes and back and forth play. Briercrest got out ahead by 4 in the early minutes, however momentum would swing SAIT's way as they got rolling on offence and jumped ahead by as much as 9. The Trojans took an 80-72 lead into the final quarter. 

 

In the fourth, the Clippers scored the opening few baskets to cut the lead to just 2. The teams kept it close throughout the fourth and the Clippers trailed by just 4 entering the final minutes of the game. The Trojans held on to a 1 point lead in the final minute of the game, and went home with a 98-95 win in a hard fought battle. 

 

The Player of the game award for Sait went to #8 Gemie Muya, who had 19 points and an impressive 18 rebounds. For Briercrest, the award went to #11 Brandon Tolentino who recorded 29 points, along with 4 rebounds and 2 assists. 

 

After the game, Tolentino had this to say; " It was a good game, good way to end the season. We only lost by three so it was pretty close, I'm proud of this team".
