Slow start impacts final result in season opener
Briercrest Men's Basketball hosted Ambrose University in the season opener Friday night.
Briercrest started off strong with the first point, an immediate shot from 3. In the midst of
Ambrose hammering hard in the first quarter, #4 had an impressive steal to give them a
comeback halfway into the quarter and #21 had an impressive defence against a break away for
Ambrose. Ultimately Ambrose's extreme offense gave them a 15 point lead at 29-14.
The second quarter had the crowd in a frenzy as both teams more than doubled their points and
traded shot for shot. Strong shooting at 3 gave helped Briercrest gain some ground despite going
into halftime down by 32 to Ambrose with the totals scores of 61-29. Excited to see them come
out of half time.
Briercrest comes out of half time with a stronger defence and quick interceptions! Pressuring a
hard offense, Briercrest was able to close in on the 30 point lead, but Ambrose got away with
lucky lay-ups pushing the score to 86-46 in their favour.
However, the final quarter had everyone on the edge of their seat! Briercrest came out with an
immediate point to set the stage for the game as improved accuracy and strong shooting at 3 gave
Briercrest 45 point—double their score from the first half in a single quarter and closing a 45
point lead to 23. They pressured hard to the end with a superior defence as Ambrose was only
able to gain 28 points compared to Briercrest's leap in score, closing the game at 114-91.
Player of the game awards were presented by Max Summach to Ambrose's #3 Linden Jackson
with 25 points, 1 assist, 7 rebounds, and 6 steals; to Briercrest #8 Jude Shepherd-Hills with 25
points, 1 assist, 11 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Jude Shepherd-Hills had this to say about the game: "We came out flat, we weren't ready, but we
showed that we could [compete better] when we beat them in the second half. We're ready to go
for tomorrow because we played well in the fourth and we can build on that. Excited to play for
tomorrow." So are the fans of Briercrest as they eagerly await the next game tomorrow
afternoon.
Taking it game by game, Jude and his team look forward to improving every week as they work
towards the Play Offs. First step of that goal unfolds tomorrow with the re-match.
