Men's Basketball Huskies best Ooks to move to 10-0
The Keyano Huskies Men's Basketball team extended their record to a perfect 10-0 with an 87-75 victory over the NAIT Ooks at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre in Fort McMurray, Alta. Sunday.
"It was good to get the win," said Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga. "I thought we had really good flashes of playing some really good team basketball.
"Give credit to them once again, they kept battling back and kept clawing back and made it a close game."
Sean Michael-Clancey erupted for 29 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, to lead all players. Ringo Dau added 13 points and Jacob Simmons collected a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.
"I still pretty much got to all my spots and got shots up like I wanted to," said Michael-Clancey, who bested his former program for the second time in as many days. "[I] didn't get a lot of the ones I thought were like the easiest ones to fall, but for the most part, it felt like practice playing against them again and this time it was in game form.
"It's a good feeling moving forward."
Wielenga had high praise for his fourth-year guard out of Las Vegas, Nev., who equalled his season-high point total in Sunday's win.
"He put on quite the show for the people that came down to watch," noted Wielenga. "He's a very talented individual and we're very happy to have him here."
The Ooks challenged their hosts and kept the game close with a 21-19 Huskies lead through the first quarter. Keyano took charge in the second quarter though, extended their lead to eight points in a 43-35 game at the half.
The Ooks kept pace with the Huskies and closed the gap by two more points by the end of the third quarter. However, the Huskies won the fourth quarter by a 23-17 margin to claim the 12-point victory.
Griffin Lorenz drained 27 points to lead the Ooks' offensive game while Dante Dinter added 19 points and Luka Korosec contributed 15 points.
The Huskies shot 53.3 per cent from the field on 32-of-60 shooting, including seven three-point shots. they sank 16 of 25 attempted free throws.
Countering, the Ooks shot 46.6 per cent from the field on 27-of-58 shooting, making 12 three-point shots in the game. Nine of their 13 free-throw attempts were made good in the game.
The Huskies will travel down to Edmonton next weekend for a single game against the Concordia Thunder on Sunday, February 6 at 3:00 p.m.
