Trojans come from behind after lacklustre second and third quarters
CALGARY, ALTA., (Feb, 19, 2022) - SAIT Trojans men's basketball head coach Marty Birky's 100th career Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) victory was filled with highs and lows.
His team fell asleep for the second and third quarters, but overcame an 18-point deficit in the fourth to beat the Lethbridge College Kodiaks 69-68 Saturday afternoon at SAIT's Campus Centre.
SAIT takes sole control of first place in the ACAC South Division with a 13-2 record, while Lethbridge falls to 12-3.
The catalyst for SAIT was Tyis Yellow Horn. He came into the game with less than 7 minutes left as an attempt by Birky to inject some life into his team. He did just that, connecting on a three-pointer right out of the gate, and then going 6-for-7 from the free throw line to close the 18-point gap his team faced.
Yellow Horn finished with 11 points - all scored in the final 7 minutes - to be named his team's Player of the Game.
Down 68-67, SAIT's Marcus Masters missed a layup, but got his own rebound and was fouled trying to score again, sending him to the free throw line. He connected on both with less than 9 seconds left to put the Trojans up by 1. Lethbridge raced down the floor and had a shot at winning the game, but could not get the shot to drop.
Chris Schlauwitz earned Lethbridge's Player of the Game honour after scoring 13 points.
The Trojans will finish their regular season next Saturday night at home against St. Mary's University.
