An incredible 4th quarter lifts the Kings over the Rustlers
Red Deer, November 19 - The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings were put to the test in back-to-back nights with a match up against the Lakeland College Rustlers. Last night, the Kings lost to a nationally ranked Keyano College Huskies squad 105-80. The Rustlers came into tonight with a 3-4 record after losing 82-86 in an overtime thriller against the Olds College Broncos.
It was a high intense first quarter in this interdivisional match. The Rustlers came out on top 27-23 after the first quarter. Seven players for the visiting team all hit the scoresheet in an impressive team effort. For the Kings, it was Eduardo Crespo, last years ACAC Rookie of the Year, with eight points which was enough for the team lead.
The Kings would inch closer to the Rustlers early in the second with a three pointer from Cole Wicker (Bachelor of Education Secondary) to put them within one of the visiting team and would continue with a force on offense. They outscored the opponent 20-9 in the second which led the Kings to have a 43-36 lead going into the locker room. Brazilian Bernardo Moller (Academic Upgrading) would overtake Crespo for the team lead with nine points and at the half, guard Michael Shelast from Lakeland finished off with nine points of his own.
It was a tight third quarter that saw the Kings extend their lead by three. Moller would continue his team lead in points with 16 points and also had three rebounds. It was pretty much a team effort all around for Lakeland as their team leader in points, John Mims, only had 11 points with one quarter to play. Seven other Rustler's players all hit the scoresheet by the end of the third with only one other in double digits.
The players of the game went to John Mims of the Rustlers and Bernardo Moller of the Kings. Mims finished his night with 24 points, four assists and three rebounds. For Moller, he had an impressive night from beyond the arc as he went six-for-nine and completed his night with 22 points.
The Rustlers will play to host the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings next week Friday before travelling to Camrose for a rematch with the Vikings the next day. As for the Kings, they will round out their fall semester with two matches next week Friday and Saturday in Lethbridge against a nationally ranked Lethbridge College Kodiaks squad.
