St. Mary's Dominates Briercrest to Ascend South Division Standings
Written by Jeff Misener
On Saturday, the Briercrest Clippers and the St. Mary's Lightning renewed their rivalry in ACAC men's basketball action. After Friday's defeat, Briercrest looked to right the ship and sharpen their overall shooting percentages.
St. Mary's opened the game by converting a pair of threes, while Briercrest connected on their first layups. After STMU's Brock Dewsbery knocked down a contested three, Oroma Bongomin replied for the hosts with an acrobatic layup in traffic. Clippers' forward Matt Bryant charged to the hoop early, picking up where he left off on Friday night, only to have Lightning guard Averie Armbrister respond in kind. After the teams traded triples, a steal and score by Corbin Gengenbach pushed the hosts ahead, but a Dewsbery triple and a floater from Caleb Jipp gave the visitors a 26-23 lead.
Dewsbery's trey and driving layup opened the second quarter. Gengenbach's teardrop was answered by St. Mary's Johnpaul Okodua on an inside effort. Bongomin enjoyed a stretch of offense joy for the Clippers, but Jipp's long triple and Dewsbery's three-point play restored the visitor's control. Armbrister and Jipp delivered on short jumpers, but Bryant muscled his way to the hoop for points. Dewsbery's triple was cancelled by a Bryant step back three at the buzzer, and the teams entered the break with the Lightning ahead 56-45.
Both squads had good looks to open the second half, but only STMU cashed in on theirs. After Lightning guard Caleb Jipp hobbled to the bench favouring an ankle, Armbrister grabbed the bull by the horns and connected on a trio of triples, expanding the visitor's lead. St. Mary's executed its offensive sets with greater success than the Clippers in the quarter and enjoyed an 86-64 lead for their efforts.
Riley Seaborn dropped a triple to open the last frame, and Bryant continued to bully his way to the rim. After Dewsbery hit the floor on a hard foul by Simes, he dusted himself off and converted a driving layup and free throw. Gengenbach and Mullins hit consecutive threes for Briercrest, but Dewsbery responded with a four-point play and a thirty-footer. St. Mary's rode superior shooting and rebounding to win going away, 113-82.
Player of the Game for STMU was Brock Dewsbery, who just missed a triple double, registering a massive 41 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. For Briercrest, Matt Bryant directed the Clippers' efforts with 25 points, eight boards, and five dimes. Lightning forward Johnpaul Okodua hauled down a whopping 18 rebounds, while Briercrest forward Oroma Bongomin chipped in 19 for his team.
