MBB| Kodiaks Defeat St. Mary’s Holding the #1 Spot in the South Division

January 20, 2023- The Kodiaks looked to hold the 1st place position in the south division as the St. Mary's Lightning were only a short two points behind and were on the hunt to overtake the Kodiaks and lead the division.

Both teams started the first quarter off slow until Lightning's #1 Angelo Santiago scored the first 3-pt of the game. The score stayed tight for the majority of the quarter until Kodiaks surpassed the Lightning. Kodiaks #13 Chris Thomson found his footing in the first quarter scoring 6-pts for the Kodiaks with two rebounds. Kodiaks were able to gain a 10-point lead in the last few minutes of the quarter and ended with a score of 22-14.

Lighting started the second quarter off with the first point attempting to close the gap, Kodiaks stood their ground gaining a further lead from the Lightnings. Lightning #10 Johnpaul Okodua fought hard trying to close the gap, earning four points with five rebounds throughout the quarter. As the gap slowly started closing Kodiaks called a timeout reassessing their play. Kodiaks kept the game in their hands gaining a whopping 19-point lead, #4 Taylor Barfuss scoring 7 points through the second quarter. As Kodiaks kept their lead the quarter came to an end with a score of 49-27.

Kodiaks opened the gap up further scoring the first couple of points of the third quarter, Lightning was not too far behind at another attempt to close the gap. Lightning's #7 Brock Dewsbery kept his stance with 4 points through the quarter, although Kodiaks kept the game when #7 Filip Karanovic scored his 4 points. Lightning held their defense, but it was not enough to stop the Kodiaks, the quarter finished with a score of 63-40 leaving the Kodiaks in the lead.

The final quarter moved fast as both teams fought for the win, Lightnings were slowly able to tighten the score, keeping the Kodiaks on their toes. The Kodiaks were able to prevail with a strong team effort to keep the Lightning at bay and hold them off to secure a 79-69 victory.
