Broncos storm back to clip Briercrest

The Olds College Broncos overcame a 14-point deficit to upend the Briercrest College Clippers 90-88, completing a weekend sweep between the two teams at the Ralph Klein Centre on Saturday.

Player of the Game Artemus Rapada scored eight of his 25 points in the fourth quarter for the Broncos (3-13), while Austin Nzige-Nyambok added 17 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, and Keunte Howard also contributed 17 points to go with seven assists and five steals.

For Briercrest (2-14), Riley Seaborn led all scorers with 27 points along with eight rebounds, six assists and six steals, while Player of the Game Matthew Bryant posted a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

The matchup was feisty and competitive from the start, with the Broncos pushing ahead early and holding on to a 24-19 lead through the opening quarter. After a Tyerique Williams three to extend the lead to eight early in the second, Briercrest responded with an 8-0 run spanning 1:10 to tie the game at 27-27. The Broncos pushed ahead by seven late in the second, only for the Clippers to close the quarter on a 12-1 run to take a 45-41 lead into halftime.

Briercrest continued to assert itself for most of the third, with a Zach Martens dunk punctuating a run that extended the Clippers' lead to 70-56, though the Broncos would close the gap to 73-65 heading into the fourth.

The Clippers again reached a double-digit lead early in the final frame, but the Broncos dug in from there and began the comeback, taking took the lead for good with 1:29 remaining after Rapada hit a three-pointer, with Gurech Gurech making a floater shortly after to put the Broncos up 90-87.

After Bryant made one of two free throws with 50 seconds to go, Briercrest had an opportunity at the buzzer for the second straight day, but a Brolin Simes three-point attempt was short of the mark.

Next up, the Broncos will contest a home-and-home with the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings beginning Friday in Red Deer at 8 p.m., while Briercrest will host the SAIT Trojans for two in Caronport beginning Friday at 7 p.m. MST.
